This is a guide for Washburn University students with interest in or who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. The purpose of this guide is to both spread awareness and provide resources for those who may be struggling with their gender or sexual identity. Comments are welcome.
Happy Pride!
Pride "is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements" (Wikipedia, 2021).
Pride can mean many things to different people, but love and acceptance presides at the core of the movement. Although same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States in 2015, there is still a long road we must walk before all members of the queer community can celebrate having equal rights.
Washburn University strives to be a safe space for those who are lost or questioning. Each and every one of our students is included in our Ichabod family regardless of how they identify, and we encourage all students to reach out to faculty if they have any questions or concerns.
