Textbooks contain the basic principles and theories of a field, the commonly-agreed-upon information. Check your course textbook for relevant information.

Reference Books

Reference books include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals and directories. These are used to find specific information or definitions. Mabee Library provides access to several online reference books.

Encore, the library catalog, can be searched to find books, maps, journal titles, CDs, DVDs, and other material located in Mabee Library and 5 other libraries in the city of Topeka.

The regular and oversize book collections are located on the 3rd level. The rare book collection is located on the 1st level in the Washburn Room.

Finding Books Not Available in Mabee Library

To identify books not owned by Mabee Library, search one or more of the following catalogs:

  • WorldCat - connects you to the collections of more than 10,000 libraries worldwide
  • COPAC - the combined online catalog of 28 research universities in the UK and Ireland
  • British Library Integrated Catalog - operates from the British Library which has a copy of all the publications available in the UK
  • Library of Congress - search the holdings of the U.S. Library of Congress
  • Amazon - search the holdings of Amazon.com

Books not owned by Mabee Library may be borrowed from another library using a service called "interlibrary loan." This service is free to all Washburn students, faculty, and staff.

Library of Congress Classification System
