Mission of the University Libraries

The Washburn University Libraries are teaching libraries, dedicated to student success and the development of a Community of Learning that effectively, efficiently and ethically uses information in the knowledge society.

Mission of the Center for Student Success and Retention

The Washburn University Center for Student Success and Retention leads institutional efforts to transition students successfully into our Community of Learning and empower them to achieve academic success.

Core Values of the Washburn University Libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention

As employees of the Washburn University Libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention, we affirm and support the core values of our institution: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, Respect, Collaboration and Innovation. In addition, we embrace and uphold the following Unit level values:

  • People: We believe personal and professional relationships rooted in a “can-do” attitude foster individual, unit and institutional success for and in the Washburn University Community of Learning.
  • Access:  We believe that freedom to access information and the WU Community promotes and preserves learning.  We are committed to ensuring that access takes place in environment that promotes free speech, open inquiry and equality, regardless of prior academic preparation or performance.
  • Social Responsibility:  We believe that libraries and learning are public goods crucial to the present and future of democracy, and for a just society.  We are committed to producing educated, informed and socially responsible students who are prepared to succeed in the unknown economies of tomorrow and lead the transformation of our/their communities.
  • Stewardship:  We believe it is our duty to maintain and develop the collections, services and facilities of the Washburn University Libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention so that they promote success for all members of our Community of Learning.  We are committed to planning and preparing for future opportunities, both known and unknown.
