Ashley Maxwell [Faculty Profile] Lecturer, Anthropology Sociology/Anthropology OER Adopted: Perspectives |
OER Adopted:
Cultural Anthropology is a social science general education course that is offered every semester at Washburn. In general, I teach at least two sections a semester. I adapted an OER textbook Perspectives: An Open Invitation to Cultural Anthropology by attaching chapter PDFs for each week's topic, and additional Open Access videos for students to access.
Student Impact:
I surveyed my students over the first two semesters of use, and over 80% recommended implementing the textbook again and said it helped with the completion of reading for the course. Here are some quotes from the student's themselves: “cost being zero is nice!” “you don’t have to sprain your back carrying books and you can access it whenever and wherever” “saves students money” “the information is recent and fresh” “the textbook was really interesting and engaging”
The Future:
I am in the process of removing the traditional textbook (cost over $100) in my Introduction to Forensic Science general education course, and have received another OER grant for this process. As this is an asynchronous online course, I would like to find open access labs and readings for the various topics, instead of assigning a large/expensive textbook. My hope is that the information will be easier for students to grasp and apply in an online format.
