Helpful Citations for Diagnostic Manuals

The Diagnostic manual is often cited, earlier editions do not need a DOI, but more recent editions do.  Please check the manual, if it is a regular version, revised version or online version will vary in citation style.

Important notes about Diagnostic manual citations:

  • Because the author and the publisher are the same, “American Psychiatric Association” is written only in the author element.
  • The correct edition must be listed, if it has online access, the DOI must be added.  Depending on the edition the DSM manual would be cited as:

American Psychiatric Association. (1994). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (4th ed.).

American Psychiatric Association. (2000). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (4th ed., text rev.).
