Important points to remember for periodical and Academic journal reference citation:

  • Keep authors in the same order as the Journal article. These are in order of contribution
    • Author format is Last name, followed by First and Middle initials.
    • The year the article was published is in parenthesis after the authors are listed.
    • If there are several authors, they are combined with commas and an ampersand '&' before the final author,
      • Anderson, M., McCauley, S. H., & Smith, C. N. (2021).
  • Journal article titles are not italicized
    • This is different from book titles and webpage titles which are both italicized.
  • Journal article titles are capitalized like a sentence.
    • This means only the first letter is capitalized, as well as any proper nouns, such as names, cities, or organization titles.
  • Academic Journal publishers will be Capitalized and in italics.
    • There will be a comma instead of a period following the Journal Publisher's name
      • The American Journal of Medicine,
  • The volume number will be italicized
  • The issue number will not be italicized inside the parenthesis
  • There is no space between the volume number and the issue number.
    • Volume 8, in Issue 74 would be 8(74)
  • The page range or article number is listed directly following the volume and issue number. This is separated by a comma
    • No abbreviation for the word page is used, the page numbers are not in italics.
      • Volume 8, in issue 74 on pages 23-58, would be written as 8(74), 23-58.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to an article by the publisher and is used to provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet.   In addition, they provide a linking mechanism in the reference lists of electronic articles that allow click-through access to each reference.  APA recommends that you use them in reference lists when DOIs are available.
